BF-Games: Interview with Point of Existence (07/09/2007)

Nachgefragt: PoE im Interview

BF-Games: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Can you give us a short introduction and describe your position in the team?

Greasy Mullet: I am Greasy Mullet the lead mapper for PoE2.

BF-Games: With a release of the first version in August 2006 you’re one of the „First Movers“ in the mod scene. The build contained a lot of maps, vehicles, and weapons, therefore new game modes and gimmicks like the death zones around the home base. Only an own Playermodel was missing. What are the reasons?

Greasy Mullet: The player model requires a tremendious amount of work to complete. We felt that our resources be better spent on other more critical areas rather than something so purly cosmetic.

BF-Games: During the last weeks we saw a lot of new toys for the main fractions but also the introduction of the USMC as new force on the battlefield. What are the reasons for a third fraction at this point of development instead of the completion of the two existing ones – for example with own player models for Germany and the Ukraine?

Greasy Mullet: The USMC has always been a part of our plans. We have had a considerable amount of work done for them and so we just continued on with that progression. However, just because we are adding in the USMC, that does not mean we are going to neglect the German or Ukraine forces. In our coming release everybody is getting new toys and maps.

BF-Games: The announcement of the USMC as third fraction resulted in different reactions. Some players are happy to see vehicles like the return of vehicles like the AAVP, others speak of cheap recycling. How much work does it take to port a vehicle from BFV to BF2?

Greasy Mullet: There is a bit of work to be done. We have to redo the coding of course, lods, wrecks, and some might involve needed touch ups to bring up to standard. It is not some short and simple job.

BF-Games: Can we expect a Russian intervention after the arrival of the United States?

Greasy Mullet: You never know. At this time we have no comment.

BF-Games: What about the singeplayer mod for PoE:2? Is this sometimes going to be a part of the full client or will it stay a separate minimod?

Greasy Mullet: We are looking to integrate it into the mod at some point. The ai will be 90% complete by the time we release 2.0. However, this dose not include the maps. Our goal is to have our .2 released maps navmeshed before release but if they don't make it, they will be quickly updated through a patch. We have chosen to work on the new maps before the old maps because a lot of the objects within the old maps lack the vital col3 meshes. This as you know, makes working with the ai tiresome and quite frankly, not worth the effort. As times goes on, we hope that all the old objects will be patched with the col3 mesh so our single player fans are able to enjoy the older maps as well as the new maps.

BF-Games: Have you already heard about the Alternative Mod Ranking and if so: what do you think about it?

Greasy Mullet: We think its great! Anything that other modders and fans do to support the community is awesome.

BF-Games: During one of the last updates PoE picked up the number of players and the shortening of the time between two releases as one of the central themes. Are there already concrete plans or a concept for a realization?

Greasy Mullet: Yes, we plan to get into a much shorter release cycle. We feel it will allow us to be more responsive to public feedback and keep the goodies coming on a regular basis.

BF-Games: To complete this interview we have one last question concerning the future development of Point of Existence: where do you see Battlefield 2 and Poe:2 in about a year? Are you planning to continue the development and doesn’t a game like Fuels of War look more interesting than Battlefield?

Greasy Mullet: We are always looking into our options but right now we are focused on our current project and getting our next release ready for the public.

BF-Games: Thanks for your Time.
