Good Night: Interview with elxx

Interview with elxx

In September 2009 elxx, a famous modder who created BF2:Sandbox, Battleracer, and several other mini mods and tools, left the Battlefield. During a short interviews BF-Games.net asked for the reasons.

BF-Games: Much to our regret we’ve noticed to you have quit modding for the Battlefield series. How long have you considered that decision and are there any plans to continue work on another platform. ArmA for example, or crysis?

elxx: I've been thinking about moving on to something else for a long time, but various things kept bringing me back. As you know, DICE even released an update for BF2 just recently which brought back a few players as well. Unfortunately, with the delay of BF1943 for PC (I'm willing to bet that it will be cancelled), Battlefield has essentially become a console series. Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3, but console games obviously aren't very conductive to modding.

As for other games, to be frank, ArmA and Crysis are both good ideas but terrible games. There are mods for BF2 that have more players online at any given time than Crysis and all its mods combined. As I write this, only 200 more players are playing ArmA2 right now than Project Reality.

The next step for me probably won't be a surprise to anyone who has followed modders like me - I'm going to focus my efforts on developing my own games. I'm not 100% sure on the platform(s) nor even the types of games, but it seems like the next logical step.

BF-Games: Inside your farewell letter you’ve written that there will be some small updates for the Sandbox mod but not for Battleracer. As we’ve seen in the past you worked on cool new features like the stats system. Some clans and communities are still waiting for this final release. Is there any chance that another team can finish this work like it has been done for Battlefield 1918 for example?

elxx: I'm talking to a couple of modders who are interested in continuing Battleracer development, so you might actually see another release in the future. No promises though.

BF-Games: Where can we find elxx in the future? Will you continue your work as an editor for TGN or will the Sir. Community be your only platform.

elxx: I was planning to continue my work at TGN until I found someone willing to replace me. However, before I could, the corporate sponsors/owners (MyInternetServices) laid off our excellent site director and replaced him with someone outside the admin team. Since then, I've been kicked out of my position at TGN along with several other volunteers and one has even been threatened with a lawsuit. In the course of a week, TGN has basically imploded.

As for the Sir. Community, it's been a lot of fun working with them for nearly 4 years. Ever since its beginning, Sir. has been a community of PC gamers who are big Battlefield fans. Unfortunately, with the death of Battlefield on PC, the community is also shrinking. I've left my position as administrator and the community itself is on hiatus now with people moving on to school, work, and other games. Don't count them out though, there are still many talented people who will create some amazing things if another Battlefield game is released on PC.

BF-Games: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Is there anything you want to add to?

elxx: I feel incredibly honored that you guys at BF-Games found my departure worthy of a news post and even an interview. I hope this doesn't make me look like an attention whore, like everyone else I'm not a fan of people who make a huge deal out of something like this and expect everyone to give them a hero's farewell. I just wanted to set the record straight with anyone following my modding projects. Thanks for everything! I've met a lot of great people in the Battlefield community over the years.
