Electronic Arts Inc., EA +3.08% fresh off announcing it cut 10% of its workforce to trim costs, is investing in a new Los Angeles studio for its Stockholm-based DICE game developer with the goal of poaching talent from rivals like Activision Blizzard Inc. ATVI +3.13%

The DICE unit, purchased by EA in the middle of the last decade, will be a key cog in the creation of a new series of Star Wars videogames. Walt Disney Co.DIS +0.22% announced last week that it enlisted EA to make Star Wars games weeks after closing its LucasArts games division.

DICE, also known as Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment, has historically worked from Stockholm, where it started operations in 1992 by creating a pinball game that achieved a cult following. From there, it built its megahit Battlefield games and became a jewel in the EA portfolio of assets.

"Battlefield 3," for instance, sold 17 million copies and amassed a subscriber base of 3.5 million, and "Battlefield 4" will be released this fall. DICE and other EA developers, Visceral Games and BioWare, will produce Star Wars.

DICE specializes in first-person shooter games where the player is given a first-person role in the performance on the screen. In "Battlefield 3," for instance, the player takes a role as a soldier engaged in a virtual battle with other players who are online and playing the role of soldiers from opposing factions.

As DICE begins the initial phases of sketching out ideas for a new Star Wars game, it is in the process of opening a Los Angeles office this month to help with recruiting talent, General Manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson said in an interview at the Stockholm office.

"There is an extreme talent pool over that we want a part of," he said. "It's no secret that our main competitor is there," referring to Activision's Infinity Ward and Treyarch operations, which use Southern California studios to work on the popular Call of Duty game that outsells Battlefield.

While not divulging specific numbers, Mr. Troedsson said the DICE studio represents a significant investment with plans to add 60 staffers by the end of 2013. He said the firm is looking to add the best talent in the business for the venture, and that DICE needs to expand its wings following the success of the Battlefield franchise.

The new DICE studio comes on the heels of tough actions taken to slim down the wider EA operation. About 900 of the company's 9,000 employees recently were cut in order to achieve a 20% operating margin.

Mr. Troedsson said DICE will strive to maintain its Nordic work environment, where managers are known to make decisions by consensus and employees are afforded long parental leaves to care for children.

DICE also expects that the opportunity to work on the next Star Wars games attract talent from rival firms. "People stood up and cheered, when I announced that we were working on Star Wars," he said, indicating the same enthusiasm could be used in recruiting.

He said creators of the new Star Wars game are looking at either creating an entirely new experience or piggybacking on an older Star Wars game series.

Mr. Troedsson, who describes himself as a passionate gamer with an interest in motorcycles, said he is a fan of classic Star Wars games. "For me it's a boys dream come to life, I've grown up with Star Wars."

The new studio opened its doors recently, and has brought in some EA employees who worked on the Medal of Honor series, as well as outside talent.

Frank D. Gibeau - President of The EA Labels:
In fiscal '14, we will release 11 major titles across consoles and on the PC. This includes our core sports titles: Madden, FIFA, FIFA Manager, NBA Live, NHL and NCAA Football, as well as Need for Speed, Battlefield, Command & Conquer, and from our partners at Insomniac, FUSE. And as we announced yesterday on EA's blog, we will publish the Sims 4 on PC in early 2014.
Regarding next-generation consoles, we are under a nondisclosure agreement with our platform partners. However, we're planning a full reveal at E3, including more next-generation titles in development for fiscal '14. This will include breakthroughs in graphics and gameplay for some of our biggest franchises, including Battlefield, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live and Need for Speed. We plan to unveil new titles from EA SPORTS, BioWare and DICE, and a first look at some brand new games.
In March, our DICE Studio debuted Battlefield 4 with a stunning 17-minute demo entitled Fishing in Baku. Critics were blown away by the advanced physics and graphics and fans demonstrated their support. Pre-orders are going extremely well. Join us at E3 for a deeper look at the title that will define the next generation of gaming, Battlefield 4.

I also wanted to call out a big accomplishment by the teams that built the development engines for our next generation of games. Frostbite 3 engineered at DICE and a brand-new engine from EA SPORTS. These world-class tech stats are powering all of our development on the new systems. They provide an enduring common technology that saves cost, fosters efficiency and provides spectacular physics and graphics for our games. This isn't a vision. These engines are fully functional right now and powering the games you'll see at E3 in June. You'll hear more about Frostbite 3 and our new sports engine at our E3 investors breakfast in June.
