Auszug:

Ho 229 "Flying Wing" There's actually some dispute over nomenclature regarding this aircraft. German aircraft, like their Soviet counterparts, bore prefixes based on the companies that produced them -- the "Ho" is short for "Horten," as in Walter and Reimar Horten, designers of the plane. The famous "flying wing" was to be manufactured by Gothar, leading some to call it the Go 229, but since the aircraft never went into active production, the former name has generally stuck.

The 229 was intended to be a long-range fighter-bomber, equipped with four 30mm Mk 108 cannon and two 1,000kg bombs. It had excellent handling, a maximum range of almost 2,000 miles, and a top speed closing in on the sound barrier at 607mph, thanks to its twin Junkers turbojet engines. However, it never made it out of the testing stages. Shortly after its maiden flight at Oranienburg in January 1945, Allied soldiers overran the research facility.
